The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones Movie Review

The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones is an adaptation of the bestselling series, The Mortal Instruments, by Cassandra Clare. Think Harry Potter meets Twilight. There’s a lot of magic, vampires, werewolves, good vs. evil kind of stuff. For those who have not read the book, the movie might be a little confusing and superficial at times. The movie failed to develop the personality and the background of the characters. I would suggest to read the book first before watching the movie to get a grasp of who’s who and the emotions that are supposed to be there between the characters. The book is an easy read, will take less than a day to finish. What I love about the movie is that its lead actors, Lily Collins and Jamie Campbell Bower did not disappoint. Their chemistry on film was much better than Emma Watson and Rupert Grint (Harry Potter’s Hermione and Ron). The other supporting actors were great too. I just wished they had a better script to deal with. The biggest disappointment for me was the role of Magnus Bane. He was supposed to be this hip and powerful Wizard but sadly, his exposure was too limited. Same goes for Valentine, did not show the “Voldemort” level of evilness. Overall, its a nice movie with great effects and cool fight scenes.
